Bishop Maginn bounces back with sack attack

Bishop Maginn's Pierre Sandaire drags down Averill Park's Tyler Listing in Thursday's Class A Division I game at Bleecker Stadium. The Griffins sacked Averill Park quarterback Ryan Macari five times in a 25-7 victory. (Photos by J.S. Carras - The Record).

"I’ve always said, the best way to defend the pass is that the quarterback can’t throw it when he’s on his back," Bishop Maginn head coach Joe Grasso said.

Averill Park junior running back Tyler Dunworth looks to corral the ball during Thursday's game. Dunworth stole the show as the Warriors' punter, once pinning the Griffins on the one-yard line and again dropping the ball inside the five, only to have his cover team muff it into the end zone for a touchback.

"They played a heck of a game and they brought heat," said Averill Park head coach Zach Gobel. "They’re an athletic team and they disrupted our routes. They did a good job of disrupting our routes in the secondary."

A host of Warriors look to pounce on a loose ball during Thursday's game. Averill Park took a 7-7 tie and plenty of momentum into halftime, but was worn down by Bishop Maginn's Tymear Mallory, who finished with 218 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

"The line just opened up the holes and I just found the open spaces," Mallory said. "I did what I do. I ran fast."

Averill Park senior running back and linebacker Justin Collen left the game late in the first quarter, apparently re-injuring his left knee. He suffered an ACL tear in the same knee last season.

"It’s the same thing it’s always been," Gobel said. "We’re having trouble getting him through a game. He’s getting that dinged up, but he’s certainly playing his heart out when he’s in there."
