Watervliet loses in overtime

The Watervliet Cannoneers football season came to an end with a 14-7 overtime loss to Saranac Lake in the New York State regionals on a murky Saturday afternoon in Plattsburgh.

The Cannoneers held the Red Storm scoreless in the first half and played strong defense throughout limiting Saranac Lake to 81 yards rushing.

In the end though the Cannoneers couldn't overcome a series of costly penalties committed near the red zone.

The Red Storm scored the eventual game winner on the first possession of overtime and then kept the Cannoneers from answering.

Dom Diaz scored Watervliet's only touchdown with a two-yard run in the second quarter. Diaz was named offensive player-of-the-game for the Cannoneers.

It was a memorable playoff run for Watervliet and its 19 seniors. In an underdog role they knocked off Chatham and Schuylerville in back-to-back weeks to earn the school's first Section II title since the 1997 season.
